Questions and Answers: In-Depth Responses

Is there any fossil record of an extinct otter similar to Aonyx capensis that once lived in Central America? Thanks!

Dave Francazio, 2 August 2007

Response from Lesley Wright

I'm afraid I can't find any record at all of an otter like Aonyx capensis from Central America. As far as the discovered fossil record shows, and as far as I can track down, this kind of otter (bunodont) spread prolifically in the Old World but never made it to the New.

Do you have any records to the contrary? I would be very interested to hear more.

Sorry I can't help with this one
